The pattern was pretty clear. Learners who completed courses shared one trait: the course had projects built into the curriculum, not bolted on at the end.

What to Look for in Any Course Before You Commit
Four things. That’s it.
- Projects throughout, not just at the end — this is the single biggest predictor of whether you’ll retain anything
- Instructor activity — when did they last update the course? An outdated curriculum can teach you deprecated practices
- Community access — Discord servers, forums, and peer learners dramatically reduce dropout rates
- Honest reviews — look for reviews that mention what the course doesn’t cover, not just praise
Oh, and this part’s important: don’t use course completion as a proxy for learning. I know people who’ve completed eight Udemy courses and still can’t build a basic CRUD app. The certificate isn’t the goal. The ability is.

Here’s the thing about YouTube — it’s not a replacement for a structured course. But as a supplement? Genuinely irreplaceable.
When you hit a concept that isn’t clicking in your primary course, a ten-minute YouTube explanation from a different instructor can unlock it instantly. Different teaching styles work for different people, and YouTube gives you access to dozens of approaches for the same concept at zero cost.
Quick aside: some of the most-watched programming channels on YouTube have better production quality and deeper explanations than courses that cost hundreds of dollars. Channels focused on visual explanations of algorithms, data structures, and debugging are particularly valuable for visual learners.
The workflow that seems to work best: one primary course as your spine, YouTube for clarification on specific concepts, and community forums (Discord, Stack Overflow) for debugging help when you’re stuck. That three-layer approach costs very little and covers almost every learning gap.
