💡 Seogwipo’s vegan restaurant scene punches above its size — ocean views, local ingredients, and a few hidden gems that even longtime visitors miss.
Why Seogwipo Is Quietly Becoming a Plant-Based Food Destination
Nobody told me Seogwipo would be this good for vegan food. I expected beautiful waterfalls, the usual tourist trail, maybe a smoothie place near Cheonjiyeon Falls. What I found instead was a small but genuinely thoughtful restaurant scene that takes local ingredients seriously.
Plot twist: the city’s isolation from the mainland food supply chain has actually worked in its favor. Chefs here cook with what grows nearby. And a lot of what grows nearby is plant-based by default.
Seogwipo’s Top Vegan Restaurants by Cuisine Type
💡 Different restaurants in Seogwipo own completely different niches — pick based on what kind of meal you’re actually in the mood for.
A food blogger I met on the Olle Trail — someone who’d been documenting Jeju’s independent restaurant scene for several years — told me that Seogwipo’s vegan options have changed dramatically in the last few years. “It used to be one temple food place and a lot of wishful thinking,” she said. “Now there are actual choices.”
Quick aside: Hadam Vegan’s rooftop is genuinely spectacular at sunset. I’m not usually the type to care about views when I’m hungry. But sitting up there with that kelp noodle bowl and watching the light change over the water? That’s a specific kind of travel memory.
Ocean-View Dining and Seogwipo’s Local Specialties
The ocean-view options cluster around the southern cliffs near Jeongbang Waterfall. Chamsuri Cafe in particular gets very busy between 10am and 1pm — arrive early or you’ll wait.
Here’s what makes Seogwipo’s local specialties different from what you’d find in Jeju City. The proximity to the coast means seaweed and kelp show up in everything. Miyeok, gim, and several varieties of sea vegetables that don’t have standard English names appear as garnishes, bases, and sometimes the main event.
The fermented black garlic at Bomnal Sikdang deserves its own mention. Seogwipo’s climate produces a version of aged black garlic that’s sweeter and less sharp than what I’ve had on the mainland. Has anyone else noticed this? The volcanic soil apparently does something to the sugar content. I’ve tried to replicate it at home. I can’t.

Hidden Gems and Value Picks That Locals Actually Use
💡 Sandan Sikdang is the local’s secret — no English menu, modest decor, and some of the most carefully prepared temple food on the island.
Sandan Sikdang is the one that surprises people. No Instagram-friendly plating. No English menu. The owner — an older woman who’s been running it for over a decade — doesn’t particularly care about being discovered. Which is exactly why the food is so good.
The five-grain porridge there uses grains sourced from a single farm in the Halla mountain foothills. I honestly wasn’t sure whether I’d enjoy it — porridge doesn’t sound exciting. It was the best thing I ate in Seogwipo.
For pure value-for-money, Bomnal Sikdang and Sandan Sikdang are the clear winners. You’re eating at the ₩8,000–₩14,000 range and getting food that costs significantly more to produce than those prices suggest. The chefs here aren’t cutting corners — they just don’t charge Seoul prices.
One practical note: most of the smaller local spots are closed on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with no consistent pattern. Check before you go. Showing up to a locked restaurant after a 20-minute walk is a very specific kind of disappointment I’ve now experienced twice.
